Santa Teresa, Costa Rica – One of the world’s most amazing beach travel destinations
February 27, 2010Geoffrey McCabe No Comments »Welcome to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world: Malpais and Santa Teresa, known for their rugged jungle beauty, unforgettable sunsets, and especially the epic surf in Santa Teresa. The area has also become known as a hot spot for amazing cuisine in Costa Rica, since many amazing chefs have moved here from different parts of the world.
The instant you arrive in Santa Teresa and Malpais, you’ll find a very special place, quite unlike most other beach towns in Cost aRica. This town has been compared with Hawaii 40 years go, or the beach towns of California, but with monkeys, warm water, and friendly locals.
Despite the fact that word has discovered Santa Teresa and Malpais in recent years, the area still has gorgeous beaches that are uncrowded, as well as secret waterfalls with warm water pools surrounded by jungle canopy, and surf spots with no one there.
It almost goes without saying that Santa Teresa is primarily a destination for surfers. This once-remote beach village was unheard of ten years ago, but now is a favorite with surfers. The waves are consistent, and the water is warm, clean and beautiful year round. It’s not surprise then that Santa Teresa has many surf shops, surf camps, and surf schools.
There are many tourists from Europe and South America… not just the U.S. and Canada, and many have stayed in the area, opening up a variety of hotels and restaurants. The food in Santa Teresa is beyond belief for such a small place. Many five-star chefs have set up their own restaurants in Santa Teresa, and they consistently produce incredible food.
The beaches of Santa Teresa have become very popular among Costa Ricans as well, and many families travel here to surf or enjoy the waves during weekends and holidays. The ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera is often a very lively scene with people starting to party before they even arrive. Malpais mean “badlands” because it is a virtual desert from December to April, with hardly a drop of rain. That also makes it very popular among tourist who don’t want any rainy days during their holidays.
Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is also known for a variety of beautiful rental homes. The vacation rental offerings include beachfront villas, mountain top homes with infinity edge pools, honeymoon cottages with million-dollar views, and much more. The prices range from $100 to $2000 per night, and even the most expensive are often well booked. Many movie stars and other celebrities have discovered Santa Teresa in these homes, possibly because Forbes Magazine rated the Malpais beaches to be among the top ten most beautiful on earth.
Many have found that renting a vacation home is superior to the experience provided by a hotel. A rental villa usually has more space, more privacy, and is a much more unique and adventurous experience. The typical tourist to this part of Costa Rica usually craves this type of lodging, and as a result there are no hotel chains set up in the area.
Hotels of all price categories are popular in the area, from backpacker hostels for $10/night to luxury beachfront hotels that are up to $1000/night. Despite its remove location, there are plenty of tourists in all price categories in Santa Teresa. It’s idyllic scenery makes it especially popular for couples going on their honeymoon, and many are now having a santa teresa wedding on the beach. Many hotels and rental houses are catering to these types of specialty travellers.
